In many ways, your pet is just like you. They need to eat, sleep, groom themselves, exercise, stay clean, socialize and rest when needed. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? It is not always that simple, as each breed may require more grooming than others, allergies may be present, living conditions change, choices of food vary and each has a different temperament.
Nothing in this article constitutes medical advice, but here are some basics that you may want to add to your pet’s routine.
1. Keep them clean. Depending on their outside activity level, they may need to be bathed more often. Brushing your dog daily keeps their coat healthier and can get rid of debris they accumulated during the day.. Smaller dogs can be washed at home and larger dogs may require professional services. Don’t let their paws overgrow because the paw can become a breeding ground for fungus.
2. Clean food is essential. There are many healthy, store-bought foods that you can buy which may be cost prohibitive. An option is to chop up carrots, cucumber, broccoli, blueberries, zucchini, and add it to their food. You should see a difference in their bowels within a week. Adding a sprinkle of olive oil, salmon oil, pumpkin or hummus adds nutrition to your pet’s diet.
3. Teeth require attention. Brushing your pet’s teeth daily is important for their overall health. Bad breath is an early sign of dental issues. Dental care is expensive and prevention is the best measure. A finger cot, soft toothbrush and doggie toothpaste can go a long way. An additive to your water can keep the teeth cleaner.
4. Exercise. A daily walk is not only good for your pet, but for you, too. If you can add small hills, cardio will be added to your walks.
5. Socialization. We all require stimulation from humans at different levels. This is the same for pets. If your pet seems sad, maybe the sound of your voice and a hug will perk them up. Some may want to spend time with other pets. Pay attention to their demeanor and if they seem sad, a hug can go a long way..
6. Rest. Keeping your pet on a schedule will help with their sleep schedule and yours. IDEA: Brush your dogs teeth and coat before they go to sleep.
There are many supplements that you can add to your dog’s diet. I do not have any direct relationships with any of the following companies, but have found them to be helpful and cost efficient over the years.
Standard Process – has a pet line of supplements.
Homeopet – Homeopathics for various conditions.
Adored Beast – I have documented very good results from others using these products.
